Musical Theatre

The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Region 1 is pleased to offer Musical Theatre as an official area of festival programming. Although things will look a little different at this virtual festival in 2021, rest assured that we will provide the same professionally intensive programming as we have in past festivals!

The Music Theatre Area celebrates the art form by offering workshops and scholarship opportunities for students nominated for Region 1 productions, as well as all students attending the Region 1 festival.

Musical Theatre Scholarship Audition Program

This program is for students nominated for their work in their school’s production in Region 1. For the first time at the 2021 virtual festival, Independent Entries will also be considered for participation in addition to the production nominations. MTSA participants will work with industry professionals and educators in workshops and coaching sessions throughout the festival. MTSA participants may be eligible for

  • The Richard Maltby, Jr. Award for Musical Theatre Excellence
  • Scholarship awards for summer music theatre intensive programs
  • The Musical Theatre Scholarship Program Showcase
  • Musical Theatre & Dance Workshops and Master Classes

Additional Musical Theatre Events & Opportunities

We will continue to offer workshops in musical theatre audition technique, song preparation, directing, musical theatre dance and directing for the musical stage. If students would like to see specific musical theatre workshops at festival, please email suggestions to the musical theatre chair or vice-chair.

If you are a previous musical theatre nominee or a student who simply loves musical theatre and wants to be involved, Musical Theatre is looking for student coordinators to help organize musical theatre events at festival and be the student face of musical theatre at festival to help students get involved and answer questions that students may have. If you are interested, please email us!
